“Now that I have minions and mercenaries, I can take over the world.” I really do feel like a broken record because I’m running out of ways to express my enjoyment for this series. My Champion is just as great as the other books in the Bewitched and Bewildered series, and I find myself still discovering new things every time I reread the series. I find Meryn and the boy’s hijinks hilarious, and love to see what they come up with. This series is my guilty pleasure, so there isn’t really anything wrong which would turn me off from reading any book in it. I still recommend to sci-fi and fantasy geeks everywhere.

Book Review: Strange Beasts by Susan J. Morris
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“You can’t express all that with a look! Can. And did.” If ever there was a time I regretted rating almost every book I read five stars, it would be for this book. Strange Beasts, I feel, deserves so much more than five stars. The witty repartee between Sam and Hel is great, and really holds your attention. From the plot twists that keep your attention grasped until the very end to the draw of inspiration from different classics, the amount of research that went into this book proves that it is a labor of devotion. My one and only complaint is that I don’t read French, so I wish that there had been translations for all the French phrases. I highly recommend this book to fans of Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, as well as fans of the movies Van Helsing, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and 2017’s The Mummy; and the tv show Penny Dreadful.Tuesday, April 22, 2025
Book Review: My Guardian by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“Why is there a screaming man in the net? Douchebag.” Alright, we are in a new location with a ton of new characters. My Guardian is still fast-paced, and still a favorite of mine. Rereading this series for the umpteenth time gives me the opportunity to notice strands that lead to books further along in the series, and it leaves me impressed every time. I’m still not entirely sure why the minor height differences need to be pointed out as much as the major ones, but they are still easy to move past. I still highly recommend this for fantasy and sci-fi geeks.

Book Review: My Brother's Keeper by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
"You're officially family now; you've cussed at the breakfast table." I’m running out of ways to express my love for this series. My Brother’s Keeper introduces a few new characters to this world, many of whom have interesting interactions with the existing characters. It’s hilarious to meet someone who thinks like Meryn. There’s a few scenes that feel out of place, but they’re easy to get through. I feel like a broken record when I say who would enjoy this book, it’s still sci-fi and fantasy geeks.

Book Review: My Savior by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
"Why is it that the Alpha females are crazy?" Yet another great reread. My Savior is fast-paced, much like all of the other books in this series, and has great themes surrounding the idea of light prevailing over darkness. There are some slight inconsistencies concerning some minor things carried over from previous books, but they’re easy to move past. I definitely still recommend to sci-fi and fantasy geeks, and especially Tolkien geeks for this book.
Book Rating System
Rating a book is hard when you're a mood reader, but not for the reasons you're probably thinking. If I start a book and it's not matching my vibes at that moment it's going back on the shelf and I start a new book. Very rarely am I going to get completely through a book and not like it. I stopped forcing myself to read things I don't like when I graduated.
Now, how does this affect rating a book? Well if I'm not gonna finish it if I don't like it, then my ratings are very rarely gonna go below a 4 or 3. So, below are some "criteria" for giving a book a particular rating.
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専 - It made me feel or react on emotion. It caused a book hangover (also really "troublesome" for a mood reader). It's a new favorite that I would reread. Highly recommend.
馃専馃専馃専馃専 - It's a great read that I really enjoyed. It gave me all the feels. Would recommend.
馃専馃専馃専 - It was good and I enjoyed it. It was run of the mill.
馃専馃専 - I made it through, but wasn't a fan. It was just meh.
馃専 - Couldn't get through it. Do not recommend.

Book Holidays: Diada de Sant Jordi (aka Saint George's Day, aka The Day of Books and Roses)
I feel like this wouldn't really be a good Book Blog if I didn't discuss one of the upcoming, most anticipated (at least in Catalonia), book holidays. In case you didn't read the title, I'm talking about Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint George's Day), aka The Day of Books and Roses.
Diada de Sant Jordi History
On April 23rd (which is also World Book Day), Catalonia honors their patron saint, Sant Jordi (Saint George), with love and literature. It’s a very popular festival which celebrates both World Book Day (remember this?) and Valentine’s Day.
It’s customary for couples to exchange books and roses. Much like with J贸lab贸kafl贸冒 (Christmas Book Flood) in Iceland (this will come back in December), book and rose sales go through the roof leading up to the Diada de Sant Jordi. Traditionally, men would receive books and the women roses. However, nowadays both men and women receive books and roses.

| La Rambla de Barcelona |
The streets of most Catalan cities end up full of book and rose stalls. People spend their day meandering the streets searching for the perfect gifts for their loved ones.
Most of the roses that are given are red, following Sant Jordi’s legend, but recently it’s been expanded to all kinds of colors.
The legend of Sant Jordi is an epic fairy-tale about a beautiful princess, a white knight, and a terrifying dragon. It’s a tale full of love, honor, and heroism.
The legend describes a fearsome dragon wreaking havoc on the inhabitants of the small town Montblanc in Catalonia. To soothe the dragon’s anger, the townspeople decided that they would sacrifice someone every day, drawing lots to determine who they would offer.
One day, it was the princess’ turn to be sacrificed, but just when the dragon was about to devour her, a handsome knight appeared and confronted the beast. This knight was Sant Jordi, he drove his lance into the dragon, and from where its blood spilled a bush of red roses appeared. Sant Jordi presented the princess with a rose from that rosebush, since then it has been tradition in Catalonia to present a red rose to your loved ones.
The book part of this tradition doesn’t come from Sant Jordi, it comes from the International World Book Day which started in Spain in 1923. The date coincides with the death date for Miguel de Cervantes (Spain) and William Shakespeare (England), two world-famous writers.

Now, if you're cheap like me, or just want to be creative, you can make your roses out of paper and pipe cleaners.
Use the origami instructions below, courtesy of The Daily Dabble, to make the rose head, then attach a pipe cleaner to the bottom of the head with glue.

I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons by Peter S. Beagle
Dragons are common in the backwater kingdom of Bellemontagne, coming in sizes from mouse-like vermin all the way up to castle-smashing monsters. Gaius Aurelius Constantine Heliogabalus Thrax (who would much rather people call him Robert) has recently inherited his deceased dad's job as a dragon catcher/exterminator, a career he detests with all his heart in part because he likes dragons, feeling a kinship with them, but mainly because his dream has always been the impossible one of transcending his humble origin to someday become a prince's valet. Needless to say, fate has something rather different in mind...Knight of Ash: The Venomous Tempest by S.C. van Doorn

The Fireborne Blade by Charlotte Bond
Kill the dragon. Find the blade. Reclaim her honor. It’s that, or end up like countless knights before her, as a puddle of gore and molten armor.
Maddileh is a knight. There aren’t many women in her line of work, and it often feels like the sneering and contempt from her peers is harder to stomach than the actual dragon slaying. But she’s a knight, and made of sterner stuff.
A minor infraction forces her to redeem her honor in the most dramatic way possible, she must retrieve the fabled Fireborne Blade from its keeper, legendary dragon the White Lady, or die trying. If history tells us anything, it's that “die trying” is where to wager your coin.

Burning Heaven by Haydn Hubbard
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
And not one of those hot ones from the romance novels. A real, murderous, and probably not-so-drool-worthy stalker. So when her best friend pushes her towards a private security company how could she say no? Especially when the owner of the company has dark hair, tattoos, and… oh no.
Natalia has an obsession.
A lethal obsession in the form of blue eyes and freckles. Her line of work is dangerous, both her day job and her double life. She hides bullet wounds under finely pressed suits as she uses her security company as a cover for the less than savory work she does for the mafia. When Addie bursts into her life with a stalker whose modus operandi matches that of a serial killer she’s searching for, it is all too easy of an excuse to fall for her deadly obsession.
Book Review: My Healer by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“Don't make me get stabby! I need caffeine! I need chocolate!” This series is one of my guilty pleasure reads. I also fly through every book, and My Healer is no different. The plot twists always keep me hooked, and I find it hilarious how much the ladies keep the men on their toes. There’s a tad bit of repetition every time they have to explain everything to the new ladies, but you can’t really expect someone new to know what’s going on. I still think that this whole series would be great for hardcore sci-fi and fantasy geeks.

Book Review: Burning Heaven by Haydn Hubbard
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“I’d rather you be a problem than be dead.” Burning Heaven was fast-paced and kept me guessing the entire time. All of the main characters had refreshingly witty repartee with each other. The ending felt a tad flat to me, though it does have a sequel so that will probably round it out a bit. The plot twists and mafia behind the scenes should hook thriller readers.
2025 Book Bracket: Quarter 1 Results
I was trying to determine ways to show my favorite books that I had read this year, and I saw a couple people posting Book Brackets. Below are my results for Quarter 1.
My top book for January was Star Wars: The Jedi Mind. My top book for February was Red Hood and the Outlaws: Volume 1, which won out against Star Wars: The Jedi Mind. My top book for March was The Ones We Burn. It's going to be tough to determine which book is going to win out in April.

Book Review: My Protector by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“Have fun. Don't kill any of your trainees at work today, honey.” No matter how many times I reread the books in this series I’m always hooked and impressed. Even with the majority of the characters being paranormal creatures they all seem down to earth. My Protector has significantly more geeky references, which I love, especially since they’re mostly Star Wars and Doctor Who. Meryn’s bluntness always makes me crackup. These books are my guilty pleasures, so there’s not really anything I find I don’t like about reading them. I would recommend this book to fantasy readers and anyone who loves geeky references.
Book Review: My Commander by Alanea Alder
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
"We are the best of the very best. Well, I'm reassured. I knocked your ass out with your own toilet today." My Commander is an incredibly funny book that still manages to get serious for some heavy topics. This is the third time I’ve read this book and it is so fast paced and still hooks me in its grasp. There are some slight things that pull me out of the immersion, like I’m not going to be able to tell that someone is exactly 6 foot 4 inches by just looking at them, but that’s easy to push to the back of your head. I think this book would be great for all the geeks, Meryn references many pop culture items.
Book Review: Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“I’m Odessa of Grenwyr, and the dead answer to me.” Song of the Dead is just as good as Reign of the Fallen. The magic system has been expanded on, which is something I was looking for in the previous book. The action, plot twists, epic fights, and emotional turmoil made a reappearance. Fantasy readers will definitely enjoy this sequel, and the slight tech aspects will hook sci-fi readers.
Book Review: Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“Today, for the second time in my life, I killed King Wylding.” Reign of the Fallen has a unique take on magic and its connection to religion. The magic system could have used a bit more in depth explanation, but it was still easy to understand the basics. This book had action, plot twists, epic fights, and emotional turmoil, what else could you ask for? Fans of fantasy books like The Princess Bride will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Book Review: This Gilded Abyss by Rebecca Thorne
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“If you see glowing red eyes – get the hell out of the tunnels.” As a mood reader it’s always difficult to pick what to read next, This Gilded Abyss kept me hooked for two days straight. I absolutely loved the snarky repartee between Nix and Kess. I’m not normally a fan of horror, but this author was able to perfectly blend it with the mystery and sci-fi elements so that it wasn’t overwhelming. I’m a tad disappointed that it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and that the next book hasn’t been announced yet. The few different plot twists added a level of depth that will hook mystery readers, and the unique tech will keep sci-fi fans intrigued.
Book Review: The Ones We Burn by Rebecca Mix
馃専馃専馃専馃専馃専
“I am no one’s daughter, I am a weapon. Use me.” The Ones We Burn is an excellent book. For being 80 chapters and over 400 pages it’s surprisingly fast-paced. I was hooked on every word and couldn’t wait to see what would pop up next. There were plenty of plot twists to keep readers interested. The magic system could have used a little more in depth explanation, but the main parts were easy to follow. This author’s take on life, love, and royalty are a pleasure to read.
