“You can’t express all that with a look! Can. And did.” If ever there was a time I regretted rating almost every book I read five stars, it would be for this book. Strange Beasts, I feel, deserves so much more than five stars. The witty repartee between Sam and Hel is great, and really holds your attention. From the plot twists that keep your attention grasped until the very end to the draw of inspiration from different classics, the amount of research that went into this book proves that it is a labor of devotion. My one and only complaint is that I don’t read French, so I wish that there had been translations for all the French phrases. I highly recommend this book to fans of Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, as well as fans of the movies Van Helsing, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and 2017’s The Mummy; and the tv show Penny Dreadful.
